Use Your Hips to Set the Tempo

Has anyone ever told you that when you're running, you can pick up the pace of your legs by moving your arms faster? To a certain degree that's true! And the same principle (in reverse) holds true in the water. If you find your arm speed slowing down due to fatigue when swimming freestyle, try using your hip rotation to maintain your tempo. If you make a conscious effort to rotate your hips quickly, your arms will follow. This approach is particularly helpful in longer pool and open-water swims.
