Shoulder Roll Can Ease the Strain

Good freestyle and backstroke technique includes a high degree of "roll" or rocking motion in the shoulders. The shoulder roll involves more of your larger, stronger muscle groups in the stroke, making you more powerful in the water and easing the stresses on your shoulders that can cause pain and, worse, tendonitis or "Swimmer's Shoulder."
