The Marathon - During the Race

Pace. In your first marathon, don't worry about time. Just run to finish. Staying on your feet for 26 miles is a feat in itself. Then, after a marathon or two, you'll have an idea of what you can accomplish and you may want to run for time. When you do have a time goal, run an even-paced race. During the first 15 miles, run no faster than the pace you want to average for the entire race. If, after 15 miles, things are going well, you can increase your pace by five seconds per mile.
