Pacing - Start Slow

Everyone knows you can get more out of a tank of gas by driving at an even speed. By stepping on the gas, then coasting, you ruin fuel economy. The same is true in racing. There's an old adage that for every second too fast per mile in the first half of the race, you'll run at least 2 seconds slower at the end. Moreover, the problem increases if you run the first 2-3 miles too fast; for every second too fast per mile in the first 2-3 miles of the race, you can be as much as 10 seconds slower at the end.
