Don't Push It

Many respected distance coaches feel that to avoid injury, an athlete should not increase training volume more than 5% a year. For the beginner, however, this is impractical. You need to use careful and cautious methods to get around the 5% rule, and the lesson from such caution is that it is unwise to push too much too soon.
