Here's a simple motivational device: give names to the tough sections of your usual ride or run. The hardest hill on your route can be "Gutbuster hill," or a mile that's exposed to the wind can be "The wind tunnel." Then record your times for these sections in your training log and about once a month, see if you can set a personal record.
