The most common cause of numb hands is not moving them enough on the handlebars. A drop handlebar such as is found on most road bikes has many possible places to grip. Every five minutes, move your hands to another position to relieve pressure that can lead to problems. Also, don't choke the bar. Grip it loosely. On mountain bikes equipped with flat handlebars, there's only one hand position. You can still move your hands a bit sideways. Or consider adding bar ends to the bars, which will give you another place to rest your hands.
