Stop in the Name of Safety

Should you put a foot down at stop signs and traffic lights? It's a controversial issue. Some cyclists say that to make sure you've stopped completely, you need to unclip your foot from the pedal and put it on the ground, then clip back in when you're sure no cars are approaching. But other riders roll up to the stop sign, balance momentarily while they check for traffic, then accelerate. They argue that it's better to be on the bike and ready to take evasive action in case of errant motorists or pedestrians. In either case, be sure you stop and check traffic carefully - don't just roll through!
