Go Easy On the Front Brake

When riding the road, you learn to rely on both brakes almost equally because traction is excellent and the brakes act predictably. It's a different story riding off road. Loose dirt, sand, rocks and other obstacles can make using the front brake treacherous. The risk is locking the front wheel and causing it to slide sideways or stop, which usually means a flight over the bars or off the side of the bike. So learn to apply the front brake lightly and only add additional force when the conditions allow it.
