Problems Getting Protein From Non-Meat Sources

A problem with getting your protein from non-meat sources like grains, seeds, dairy products, and vegetables is that none of these contains all the amino acids. In fact, of the 22 amino acids the body uses, we can manufacture 13 from various constituents in the foods we eat. This leaves nine we must get directly. These are usually referred to as the "essential" amino acids. These nine are found together in meat, most milk products, and soybeans. In any case, vegetarians must be sure to combine foods in their diets to provide these amino acids.
