It's been a common myth that athletes need vast quantities of protein. In fact,
everyone needs protein, but many nutritionists today believe that runners need
no more than anyone else and that the average American already consumes far more
protein than necessary. Protein is not used directly as fuel for exercise, but
as building material for the cells, muscles and tissues of the body. A growing child
need three times the protein required by an adult, pound for pound.
