Carbos During the Ride

It's important during long rides to ingest some carbohydrate every 30 minutes to maintain your energy. But should those carbs be in the form of sports drinks like Gatorade or gels that come in small envelopes? Sports drinks are less expensive and easier to get down while riding--just sip from your bottle. Gels cost more per serving and are concentrated so you'll need to chase them with plenty of plain water. Also, the packaging is a potential litter problem. But they're handy to tuck in your jersey pocket for a quick boost during the ride.
