Freestyle Breathing: Don't Look to the Sky

A common error among newer swimmers, or those who are not completely comfortable swimming face down, is to exaggerate the breathing motion when swimming freestyle. These swimmers tend to turn their head far beyond the point that's necessary to draw a breath. Of course it's completely natural to go through an acclimation phase in the water, but over time you should strive to turn your head only as much as is necessary to get your mouth above the surface of the water. Any further motion is a waste of time and energy.
