Hey, Don't Step in My Bowl of Soup!

There’s a learning curve whenever you try a new sport. And that curve may be steepest in triathlon, because there’s triple the chance of making one of those embarrassing rookie mistakes. Heck, even champions have been there. Just ask top amateur triathlete Pete Kain. A two-time age-group world champ, Kain shared his list of “the top 10 signs that you’re a novice triathlete” in a recent talk at the Almaden Valley Athletic Club in San Jose, California, where he works as a personal trainer. The top ten signs are:

  1. You show up for the swim start with your wetsuit zipped up the front.

  2. Your transition area includes a huge beach towel, a wash basin, a bowl of hot soup, energy bars, gel...

  3. You tie your running shoes instead of using lace locks.

  4. Your legs are only partially shaved or not shaved at all.

  5. You’ve spent more money on your first bike than on your car.

  6. You tie a big balloon to the rack where you parked your bike.

  7. After the swim, you casually walk to your bike, wearing a big smile.

  8. You wait until race day to do your first open-water swim.

  9. You get your spouse or significant other to pin your number to your cycling jersey after the swim. Then you get him or her to pin your number to your running outfit after the bike leg.

  10. You spend more time in the porta-potty line than you do warming up.
