Making a Splash

Take the plunge! If you start swimming, you’ll do more than get in shape. You’ll run into lots of new people, too. There won’t be much talking while stroking through the pool, but before and after your swim, you’ll find yourself surrounded by people. Unless you swim alone in the ocean, here’s some ways to meet new people:

Prowl the Pool
At neighborhood pools, the faces around you will start to look familiar after a short time. These are people who share your commitment to living an active and healthy life, and your next blood pal could be the guy who splashed into your lane just a few minutes earlier. Pools are also community centers. Bring your family and friends and catch up on some of that quality time by doing something active together.

Get a Master’s
Join a class or a Masters program. Placing yourself in a structured environment also means that you will become part of a group and will work with the same people over an extended period of time. Compare notes on technique and before you know it you'll be talking about more than swimming. If you decide to compete or participate in distance swims, your class partners may become both your training team and supportive friends.

Go the Distance
Distance swimming requires team support. Go swim the English Channel or laps of Manhattan Island and you’ll be relying on your partners in training to push you through periods of difficulty. Even triathlon training, with their one or two mile swims, will include group workouts. All this interaction with other swimmers, and you’ll certainly have more than fish for friends.
