Question:
I am currently training to run a marathon in several months. I have always wanted to run one, but
Im overwhelmed at the thought of going the entire 26 miles. I am training with Team in Training for the Leukemia SocietyI find more motivation if I am helping someone else. The problem I have recently encountered is that I cant run very far. I should be running 10 to 12 miles now, but every time I head for the door I panic that I cannot finish this distance. Did this ever happen to you and how did you overcome this fear? I feel silly for not even attempting the entire distance, but I panic that I will get five or six miles from my starting point and not be able to get back. What do you recommend?
Answer:
Congratulations on your big decision to train for the marathon with Team in Training! Its a great cause. Yes, I too had a run-in with fear. That fear consumed me so much that I would get sick to my stomach. Heres what I suggest. Youre training with a group, right? So, just show up and let the group carry you through. You surely wont be able to go the distance if you dont show up for the training.
Every week you might add a little more mileage. Youll be astounded at how quickly the miles add up. I add one mile every week for a few months then add two miles every two weeks, which is all part of the training.
Team in Training has great coaches and a great support system in most regions. Show up for the
training and 60 percent of your fears will be alleviated. Write your training schedule in your
calendar so you make sure not to miss any training.
The key is to continue to educate yourself so you will feel well-prepared! I am sure you will be
able to reach your goal of completing a marathon. Best of
luck.
