Question: Im a 47-year-old overweight
couch potato who went through a lot of transitions the last six months. Im getting my
life back and signed up for a marathon through the Leukemia Society. Ive been training to
walk/run the San Diego Rock n Roll Marathon in June. For the first time in my life
I feel in control. My big problem is blisters. Ive had to battle blisters most of my
life. I went on a six-mile hike last year straight up a mountain, with no problem until I came
down. I cant seem to go more than four miles without getting five to six blisters on each
foot. I pad the ones I acquire from training, but more appear where Im not padded. It
feels like a knife is sticking in my foot. They are on the bottom and sides. I wear Saucony
CoolMax socks. Help. I dont know if I can control this. Do you have any ideas as
youve run so many marathons? Im trying to find my way and I know I have the heart
to train and gain endurance, but the blisters are dragging me down. Thanks. You are an
inspiration.
Answer: Congratulations on your big decision to
train for the Rock n Roll Marathon in San Diego. Ill also be there. Im
very excited!
I used to suffer a lot from blisters. I coat my feet with Body Glide. I wear Thorlo socks because
those work best for me. In the beginning I also used Moleskin over the old blisters so they would be padded. Definitely make sure your shoes fit adequately. Thats a common mistake beginners make. Body Glide is the best product on earth! (No, I dont get paid to say that.) You can buy it online at http://www.sportsbasement.com, and theyll ship it anywhere. It prevents chafing in all areas (if you
know what I mean), and has cured my blister
problem!
