Monica's Yo-Yo Photos

OK, bear with me. Let’s talk about Monica. Believe me, I wish we didn’t have to, but there she was in the supermarket checkout line again. It seems some tabloid photographer got a candid shot of her on a shopping spree in Beverly Hills. That’s no scandal. The problem, as the headline and blurry photo so tactfully point out, is that the would-be dieter has apparently regained the pounds she carried back in her Starr-dogged days.

But that can’t be, you say, being an astute observer of popular culture. Didn’t Monica just appear slim and trim in a Jenny Craig promo photo? Yes indeed. Lewinsky, in fact, is slated to rake in $10,000 for each pound she sheds through the Jenny Craig diet program of packaged foods and individual counseling. When her promo photo was taken in late December, she had reportedly dropped 31 pounds (do the math, that’s good money). But less than a month later, this ten-cent tabloid leads with a less than flattering photo of her. Those 31 lost pounds appear to have been found. So what’s to blame? Perhaps the Jenny Craig promo picture is a marvel of photo trickery, or perhaps the big money motivation factor just isn’t enough, or maybe the diet doesn’t work. Or maybe, just maybe, the tabloid is lying, (but that of course can’t be).

The point is there’s a lot of gimmicky weight loss plans that rely on smoke and mirrors, not scales, for proof of lost pounds. Late night airwaves are choked with less-than-ideal but quick ways to lose weight. Why not sweat off those excess pounds by wearing this plastic suit while you vacuum? Order now! Sound familiar? The sad fact is that some people fall for it, inevitably fail, and give up on weight loss altogether.

The path to weight loss, however, is alarmingly simple: regular exercise and a sensible diet.Pick an exercise or sport you enjoy, combine it with a low-fat, high-taste diet, and you’re on your way. By eating light and working out more, you’ll start to burn your stored body fat for energy. And don’t weigh yourself every day, which is what some programs tempt you to do. Weight can fluctuate dramatically over the course of a day due to both water loss and retention, not fat loss. To accurately check your weight, get on the scales only once a month. Those slowly diminishing pounds will be a much better reward than Monica’s ten grand.
