GU Energy Gel

Type of Product: Energy Gel
Manufacturer: GU
Suggested Retail Price: $24.90 for 24 packets
Ideal User: Intermediate to advanced endurance athlete
Good: Tasty, fast-acting, easily digestible
Bad: Like most gels, it's not cheap
The Bottom Line: Quick energy for performance-oriented endurance athletes

Review:
I've tried lots of energy gels, but I keep coming back to GU. I like the taste — pleasantly sweet but bland enough to go down easily even an hour or two into a hard workout. And those 25 grams of carbohydrate plus maltodextrin (an easily-digested sugar), amino acids, vitamins and buffering agents, give you a quick surge of energy to stave off the dreaded bonk (specific ingredients vary according to the flavor).

Also, GU's packaging is the best I've seen. Unlike other gels, the GU packet tears open easily, the tapered opening fits comfortably into your mouth, and you can squeeze every drop out fast — a must whether you're screaming down a bumpy singletrack or wobbling into a marathon rest stop. Like other gels, though, it ain't cheap. Even when you buy two dozen, GU costs nearly $1 per 100-calorie packet. Available flavors include: Chocolate Outrage, Just Plain, Banana Blitz, Tri Berry and Orange Burst.
