The Early Bird

Question:
As a fan of your column, I know that you like to schedule your workouts early in the morning. But how in the world do you get up at 4 a.m? I have to be at work at 7 a.m. and I can barely get up at 5:15. Do you have any suggestions to get me motivated? It’s been a real chore for me to try to squeeze in exercising, getting myself ready for work, getting my children prepared for school, and then not being late for work. I feel exhausted before noon! Anyway, thanks for all of the good vibes that you give off.

Answer:
The secret is getting to bed at a decent hour. For example, as I write this, it’s 10:40 p.m., way past my bedtime. That’s not good! Generally, I like to be in bed by 9:30 p.m. and up at 4 a.m. I lay out all my clothes the night before and have everything organized so as soon as the alarm clock goes off, I’m up and out and on my way to the gym. I have such a hectic schedule that 4 a.m. is the only time I know I’ll get my workout done.

I’m up at 4 a.m., I’m not really working out till 4:30 or 4:45 a.m., and I’m at work by 7 a.m. I usually work 12-hour days, then come home to answer all the Connectors e-mail. (Which is why I’m up late tonight—I got very behind with because of a computer virus.)

Approach your goals in small steps. Try getting up just 15 minutes earlier. If you had to catch a plane, you’d get up right? It can be done. It’s just a matter of changing your mindset.
